While exiting rehab after completing treatment, you might be wondering, “What now?” For the first time in a long time, you will need to live your life without relying on drugs or alcohol to get you through a day. Are you ready to do that?
If you don’t feel secure about your recovery, you owe it to yourself to protect all the hard work you did during treatment. We would like to recommend you living in a sober living home.
Sober living homes exist to serve as a bridge to help people adjust to being sober before returning home to the trials and tribulations they are sure to encounter. Remember, the first few months of recovery will provide you with many challenges. There will be temptations and your triggers that will test the strength of your sobriety and your newfound ability to cope. If you are not on firm ground, a relapse becomes very likely.
How long should I stay at a sober living after going to treatment?
The answer to the titled question is very clear, you need to stay until you feel ready to leave. The last thing you want to do is put additional pressure on your self by trying to get home within a certain timeframe.
Experts have designed the sober living process as a way to ease you back into your life. In your early days in the sober living home, you would be kept safe by some rather restrictive rules. As time goes on, the house manager will be watching your progress. Using their experience as a guideline, they will help you decide when to start taking on more responsibility in exchange for more freedom.
After a month or so, you might feel the need to start reconnecting with your family and friends. You might also be thinking about getting back to work or school. These are all positive signs. By the time you develop support resources (AA, NA, new friends), you’ll likely start feeling more secure about your recovery. That’s when you can start thinking about going home. We recommend you don’t do it until you are ready to deal with life on life’s terms.
We are here to help you get through your addiction. After completing treatment, we would be glad to help you find a stable sober living environment. For more information, please give us a call at 866-963-7200.
